The Key Things To Understand About Semi-Trailers

If you’re buying or renting a semi-trailer, or using one for any reason, there are a few things you need to understand in advance. Semi-trailers are quite useful but aren’t necessarily intuitive. Nonetheless, if you’re transporting something heavy or cumbersome, you may very well need to utilize a semi-trailer at one point or another. With that being said, let’s look into some of the things you’ll need to know when using semi-trailers.

1. They’re Complex

Semi-trailers are quite powerful, with the average semi having horsepower somewhere between 400 and 600. But that is accomplished through quite a few moving parts. The largest part of a semi-trailer is the frame, which in itself is responsible for holding other parts. Main beams, supporting beams, side beams, and connecting beams are all held through the frame, along with traction pins and panels.

2. There Are Multiple Types

There is no single type of semi-trailer. Semi-trailers come in many different forms, including container trailers, designed to carry heavy loads; dump trailers, which are used to transport loose materials; van trailers, which are quite commonly used as they carry many different types of goods; and much more.

3. They Require Heavy Maintenance

A good amount of maintenance is required when you’re using semi-trailers, both for the long term and the short term. Tires, for example, need to be examined on a regular basis. Semi-trailers carry heavy loads, and their tires lose pressure quite often. If your tires blow up, your trailer could be stranded for hours or sometimes even days. Axle alignment is crucial to check as well, along with the frame and the braking system. Really, every part of a semi-trailer needs regular inspections. Some simply need to be inspected and maintained more often.

4. They’re More Affordable Than You’d Think

Semi-trailers can be bought or rented, but you may be surprised by how cost-efficient they can be. The price of a semi-trailer will vary depending on what type of trailer you are interested in buying, of course. Newer trucks will usually be above $100,000, but they can be bought used as well, which are often priced between $40,000 and $70,000. If a truck is older or has higher mileage, it could be as low as $10,000.

Semi-trailers are incredibly useful. You just need to know exactly what you’re looking for.
